The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
