The world might be under pressure, however optimism persists. A new award originating at the science, music and arts festival Starmus aims to inspire individuals to take action.

This new Earth medal bearing Jane Goodall's name is to be awarded in honour of the renowned British primatologist who passed away recently. It is designed to celebrate those who protect life on Earth.

Honoring a Legacy

The inaugural winners are slated for announcement at the Starmus VIII festival in Tenerife and La Palma, scheduled from October 17th to 22nd the coming year.

It was shared that Goodall, a former member of the festival's board, had endorsed the award’s creation. “The concept behind this award, and Starmus being entrusted to oversee it, originated with Jane,” a representative said. “She expressed she would like for this to occur. This is likely because of the unique relationship she shared with us.”

“The Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will recognize enduring projects carried out to make our world a better place for all living beings and ecosystems and provide encouragement for the continuation that work,” said a family member.

Format and Inspiration

One of the founders of Starmus stated that the medal – unveiled at a prestigious venue – would probably encompass various fields.

“It will be modeled after the Stephen Hawking medal honoring scientific outreach established a decade past,” it was explained. Jane Goodall herself received of that award.

Expressing concern about the future for Earth, a prominent voice stated, “Frankly, it’s very hard to maintain optimism. Present governance in one major nation is conducting a dismissal of evidence. So this really cripples the world’s efforts.”

“It has become apparent that factual reality has become a subject of discussion when politics is involved. This is an alarming trend,” he commented. “The climate science is a science; you cannot allow interference from politics in this field.”

The hope remains that this honor can motivate concrete steps. “It focuses on inspiring individuals to get involved and to show concern and to strive toward these goals, truly. Whether or not we feel hopeful, we have to look at doing the best we can,” a statement concluded. “Be prepared for setbacks, but you still have to work toward success.”

A descendant engaged in conservation work expressed confidence that “given direction and when empowered, humans are capable of being conscientious guardians of Earth”, citing the initiatives of an institute which, in addition to its projects, empowers the next generation get involved locally, wildlife, and the natural world.

“As my late grandmother often reminded us, the choices we make each day have an impact and the responsibility lies with us the kind of difference we make,” he said. “It is not too late and the Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will give encouragement and increase understanding regarding beneficial initiatives that are being undertaken.”
