Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at both ends of pitch

After a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had scored only a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having space and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham box.

Everton: Moyes' men travel to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round League Cup tie against Newcastle.
